Erica Hauser Artist Statement:
Erica’s current work is driven by resonant color/shape impressions. She explores the abstraction of places and experiences as colors and structures, and how memories can be suggested by form and pattern. She incorporates her recollections of childhood: the nature, decor and popular culture she grew up with, which included things left by her older siblings and from decades past. As her once-new possessions age, like a faded beach towel or a box of crayons in retired hues, she has become more interested in painting a personal language of those objects. In finding the forms to describe them, she realized she was layering paint on canvas the way she stacked firewood, rolled chocolate truffles, decorated cookies, strung beads, mowed lawns, and wore clothes; all these occupations funneled into the building of new, more sensitive work, whether with paint, paper, foil or wood. The body of work she has developed over the past 15 years, with colors both vibrant and muted, is an ongoing exploration of this process.
