Open Call for Flag Pole Project at ArtYard
Design a Flag to Fly Over Kingston, NY
ArtYard is excited to invite artists and designers to submit their flag designs for our Flag Pole Project, to be displayed prominently at our new location in the heart of Kingston, New York. This project offers an opportunity to rethink the meaning and role of flags in contemporary society.
What Does a Flag Represent?
A flag is a powerful symbol—a human invention that serves as both a form of communication and a reflection of identity. Flags have historically been used to represent nations, ideologies, and movements, but in today's world, their significance is evolving. As symbols of both unity and division, flags can evoke strong emotions, rally communities, and signal ideas across vast distances.
The Challenge:
We are seeking designs that explore the potential of the flag as a means of communication in the 21st century. What does a flag mean now, and how can it be reinvented to serve as a tool for connection rather than division? How can a flag transcend traditional symbols of territory, ownership, and conflict? Can a flag unify diverse ideas, communities, and cultures?
We encourage artists to think creatively and critically about the role of flags in modern discourse. Your design could reflect themes of community, inclusion, solidarity, identity, or environmentalism—just to name a few. We are open to all interpretations of what a flag can be.
Details for Submission:
The selected design will be printed on a 3x5 feet fabric flag
Flags will be flown at ArtYard’s new location in Kingston, NY, visible to both locals and visitors.
We are accepting designs in any medium, from digital to hand-drawn artwork, as long as they are high-resolution and suitable for reproduction on fabric.
